Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My 65-year-old father-in-law has recently been diagnosed with Parkinson's disease, and we are seeking guidance on how to support him. Can you provide information on the available treatments or therapies for managing Parkinson's symptoms? Additionally, are there specific lifestyle changes, dietary considerations, or home modifications that could enhance his quality of life? We want to ensure he receives the best possible care and support during this challenging time. Kindly suggest.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understood your concern.

Undoubtedly, family support is a crucial factor in the management of Parkinson's disease (PD). The mainstay of the PD treatment is a drug that is called Levodopa. PD is a result of decreased dopamine production in the brain, and L-dopa is an external substitute for this deficiency. I am sure that your father-in-law's physician has prescribed Levodopa treatment for him. However, there are other concomitant conditions that bother PD patients, including cognitive problems, constipation, depression, sleep problems, and impotence. I suggest you to be vigilant about these possible collateral problems in him. In case of their occurrence, inform his physician for proper decision-making. There is not any significant diet or lifestyle change to be recommended. There is evidence that daily exercise with a stationary bicycle may help to preserve some motor performance in PD patients, if be applicable considering their general health and cardiopulmonary function. I hope this has helped you. Kindly follow up if you have more doubts.

Thank you.
