I am looking for more information about the development of Parkinson's disease and possible treatment options because my father was recently diagnosed with the condition. Could you share your insights on the particular neurodegenerative mechanisms behind Parkinson's disease and the most recent developments in neurological research targeted at symptom management and reducing the disease's progression? Parkinson's disease (PD) is the manifestation of a decrease in dopamine production of substantia nigra. Dopamine is vital for regulating movements. Therefore, patients will experience slowness and significant difficulties at the beginning of any movement. Parkinson's disease may also cause tremors in the hands or other limbs. Unfortunately, Parkinson's disease is also a neurodegenerative disease and gradually can cause cognitive and memory problems in patients.

In up to 10 percent to 15 percent of cases, Parkinson's disease is due to genetic mutations. However, having mutated genes does not guarantee that an individual will develop Parkinson's disease, as environmental factors also play a significant role. Unfortunately, at present there is no cure for Parkinson's disease, but we can manage it with a set of medications including, Levodopa-C, dopamine agonists, and (MAO) Monoamine oxidase inhibitors. In some younger patients or patients with refractory diseases, deep brain stimulation by implanting electrodes in the brain is an option. Recently, it has been shown that some medications from the GLP-1 class have the potential ability in slowing PD development.

There are some clinical trials for novel treatments, such as targeting alpha-synuclein as a substance that might be a possible underlying reason for substantia nigra dysfunction.
