Can birth control options help manage PCOS/PMOS symptoms?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 23-year-old diagnosed with PCOS or PMOS. I was previously prescribed Diane pills but stopped after one month due to negative effects on my mental health. I did not return to my first obstetrician. The doctor was due to poor communication and a lack of guidance on weight management.

I need advice on safe and effective birth control options (recent unprotected sex two days before my period started; currently on day five of my period). I also want to understand if PCOS or POMS is causing mood swings and emotional ups and downs, as I am currently in therapy.

I am presently taking Myo & D-Chiro Inositol, Magnesium Glycinate, Zinc, Vitamin D, and Apple Cider Vinegar Gummies (with Garcinia Cambogia and L-Carnitine). I need to know if these supplements are safe with Glutathione drinks. I also want to find the best birth control method for managing PCOS or PMOS.

Kindly help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern.

Since you have been diagnosed with PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome), now known as PMOS (polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome), long ago, I am sure you are well aware of its effects. Irregular periods can be quite distressing as they sometimes come with intense pain or heavy flow. Managing PCOS effectively requires maintaining a well-balanced lifestyle. Your current body weight needs to be reduced, which is achievable through a proper diet that mainly excludes sugar and dairy.

Avoid foods with a high glycemic index, including sweet fruits, and focus on fiber-rich and protein-rich foods. Consulting a dietitian can help you create a personalized meal plan based on your food preferences. Additionally, if moderate to intense workouts are difficult, brisk walking for 30 to 40 minutes at least five days a week is essential. Activities like Zumba can also aid in weight loss and symptom management.

Ensure you maintain a healthy sleep schedule and engage in relaxation techniques. Kindly share your latest ultrasound report and update me on your mental health concerns for further guidance.

I hope this helps you.

Thank you.
