How to treat a damaged tooth that causes pain and swelling?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am 18 years old. In recent years, I ignored using toothpaste, resulting in extreme conditions in my teeth. One of my single teeth is badly injured. I suffered from intense pain for 15 days, three months ago. I consulted a nearby doctor, and the pain cleared. However, after 15 days, a pimple-like swelling appeared on the gum of that tooth. This resulted in pain and swelling of my cheek. My tooth is half broken. I have attached an image. What is the problem with my tooth? Earlier, the dentist also placed temporary fillings, but they lasted only 10 days. One side wall of my tooth is not present (damaged), and there is also damage near the center. Please tell me the problem and suggest a treatment.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I am glad you chose icliniq for your medical-related queries.

I have reviewed the attached image (attachment removed to protect the patient’s identity). The cavity in the tooth is very deep, resulting in a root abscess. You have to start taking antibiotic medicine like Amoxicillin 500 mg three times a day for three days along with a painkiller. Then, ask your dentist to either extract the tooth or if you want to save the tooth, ask your dentist to perform a root canal treatment. Finally, a ceramic or metal cap will be placed over it to preserve it permanently. So, the treatment options are either to remove the tooth or to undergo a root canal treatment. There is no other way. Please consult your dentist soon; otherwise, the swelling will increase and it will be painful.

I hope I have solved your query. I will be happy to help you further.

Thank you.
