Can pharyngitis cause throat and ear pain?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My son, who is eight years old, has been suffering from severe throat pain and a very high temperature for the past four days. When I consulted a pediatrician, she advised us to take Cefalexin and Cetirizine. I forgot to mention to her that he also has ear pain. Now, whenever he eats a little spicy food, his ears hurt a lot. What should I do, and what medication will cure this? What is the cause of this throat and ear pain? The doctor told us it was pharyngitis. How long will it take to get cured with proper medication?

Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Pharyngitis, an inflammation of the throat caused by viral or bacterial infections, can cause severe throat pain and fever, and it often leads to ear pain. The ear pain, especially when eating spicy food, might be due to referred pain from the throat. Complete the course of medicines as prescribed by the pediatrician for pain relief and fever reduction, and follow the dosage recommended for children. Symptoms usually improve within five to seven days. I suggest you follow a few guidelines:

  1. Apply a warm compress to the ear for relief.
  2. If ear pain persists, consult the pediatrician again.
  3. Ensure your son drinks plenty of fluids.
  4. Ensure adequate rest.
  5. Avoid spicy and acidic foods.
  6. Offer soothing foods like warm soups and soft foods.

I hope this information helps you.

Thank you.
