Piriformis syndrome occurs when the sciatic nerve gets irritated as a piriform muscle deep inside the buttock gets inflamed or tighten. This creates pain, tingling sensation, and numbness along the course of the sciatic nerve from the buttock to the leg. Treatment includes hot and cold packs, piriformis injections, electrotherapy, and progressive muscle stretching. Stretching exercises are supine piriformis stretch, cross body piriformis stretch, knee to chest piriformis stretch, and four-point piriformis stretch.
