Is a low platelet count of about 110 mcL dangerous?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My Platelet count is 110 and has been the same for the last eight months. All the rest of my blood work is normal. My testosterone is on the low side and the doctor suggests maybe TRT treatment. I am scared it will make my platelets worse. He said it may help them. He does not want to put me on prednisone cause it is not dangerously low. I am concerned I could eventually die from this. It has caused a lot of anxiety and some depression. And now my stomach and GERD are acting up too. I am going crazy about this any suggestions?

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Your platelet count is slightly low. Do not think about death, your platelet count is not dangerously low. There are many causes for thrombocytopenia (low platelet) that includes ITP (immune thrombocytopenic purpura), infections like malaria, viral infections, etc., drug-induced, alcohol abuse, uremia, hypersplenism, bone marrow suppression, etc. So consult a hematologist for examination and accordingly work up to detect the cause for low platelet count. If a specific cause is found then get it treated accordingly. If the cause is not identified then a bone marrow aspiration study can be done. Stress and anxiety can lead to gastric issues. Yoga and meditation are useful for that. You can consult a psychiatrist for the anxiety issue. I hope your concern is solved.

Thank you.
