How effective is the pneumococcal vaccine for children?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have two young children, and hearing about the risks of pneumococcal disease has me worried, especially with how quickly they pick up bugs from school. I know vaccines can help, but I want to be sure they are as protected as possible. How effective is the pneumococcal vaccine for children, and are there signs I should watch out for in case of infection? I want to do everything I can to keep them safe, but the information out there feels overwhelming and a bit frightening.

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern.

There are two pneumococcal vaccines for kids. PCV13 protects against 13 bacteria types and is part of routine shots for children under 5, given at 2, 4, 6, and 12-15 months. PPSV23 covers 23 types and is for older kids or those with certain health issues. These vaccines help prevent serious infections like pneumonia, meningitis, and sepsis.

Watch for symptoms like fever, cough, ear pain, irritability, or confusion. In severe cases, look out for difficulty breathing, a rash, or a stiff neck. Handwashing, good sleep, and a flu shot also help protect them. Mild side effects from vaccines are common, but serious reactions are rare.

I hope you got an answer.

Please let me know if you need any further help.

Thank you.
