Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
My 8-month-old son has been having frequent fevers and chest infections that our pediatrician suspects could be linked to pneumococcal bacteria. Is it common for young infants to suffer from these infections? How effective is the pneumococcal vaccine for infants, and are there any known side effects? Should I be concerned about delaying the vaccine due to his current health issues?
Please help.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I understand your concern.
Pneumococcal infections can indeed be more common in young infants, as their immune systems are still developing.
The pneumococcal vaccine is highly effective at preventing infections caused by the bacterium and is typically recommended at two, four, six, and 12 to 15 months of age. It is generally safe, with mild side effects such as fussiness or a low-grade fever being the most common.
Delaying the vaccine during an active illness is not typically recommended unless advised by your pediatrician. Consult with your doctor to discuss the timing of the vaccine based on your son’s current health status.
I hope this has helped you.
Please feel free to reach me again, in case of further queries.
Thank you.
