Are there any risks with the pneumococcal vaccine in adults?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello Doctor,

I have been reading about pneumococcal disease and started to wonder if I need the vaccine for it. I am 42 years old with no major health issues, but I do tend to catch colds and flu easily, which sometimes progress to chest infections. The last time I got sick was three months ago, and it took over two weeks to fully recover.

I have never had the pneumonia vaccine, but a coworker mentioned it is worth getting after 40, even if you do not have high-risk factors. Is that true? Would it help someone like me?

Additionally, are there any risks associated with taking it? I am not allergic to anything, but I am not fond of needles, so I want to be sure it is worth it. Is one dose sufficient, or are boosters needed later? Lastly, would this vaccine protect me from other lung infections like the flu, or is it specific to pneumococcal disease? Please let me know if it is recommended for me.

Kindly Help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Usually, pneumococcal vaccination is recommended for adults over 65 and those with specific health conditions. However, it can also be beneficial for people like you who are more susceptible to infections. The vaccine protects against pneumonia, meningitis, and bloodstream infections caused by pneumococcal bacteria.

Though side effects are rare, they may include pain at the injection site, fever, or fatigue. One dose of the pneumococcal vaccine is generally sufficient, but some individuals may require a booster after five years, depending on their risk factors. Please note that it does not protect against the flu, so getting an annual flu shot is still important.

I hope you are satisfied with my answer. For further queries, you can consult me at iCliniq.

Thank you!
