How to effectively manage the symptoms of pneumonia?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am reaching out on behalf of my mother, who is 66 years old and has been experiencing a severe cold and persistent cough. The weather has been extremely cold, and I have heard that pneumococcal disease is more common in such conditions. I am concerned because she is also experiencing shortness of breath at times, and her throat pain is severe. Could this be the early signs of a serious condition such as pneumonia? What steps can we take to help her recover at home without worsening her condition? Could her current cold weaken her immune system, making her more susceptible to complications? Should she start antibiotics immediately, or is it advisable to wait?

Please help

Hello,

Welcome to iCliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Basic diagnostic tests can help assess your mother's condition and guide treatment. Recommended tests include:

  1. Complete blood count (CBC) to check for infection or inflammation.
  2. Erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) and C-reactive protein (CRP) to assess inflammation levels
  3. Thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) to rule out thyroid-related issues
  4. Random blood sugar (RBS) to check for diabetes-related concerns.
  5. Chest X-ray (Posteroanterior View) to evaluate lung infections such as pneumonia.
  6. Sputum tests for gram stain and acid-fast bacillus (AFB) analysis to detect bacterial infections, including tuberculosis.
Vaccination is crucial in preventing pneumococcal infections and their complications. The recommended vaccines include:
  1. Pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV): Recommended for children under two, adults aged 65 and older, and individuals with weakened immune systems or chronic conditions.
  2. Pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine (PPSV23): Recommended for adults aged 65 and older and individuals at higher risk due to chronic illnesses.

Simple lifestyle changes can strengthen the immune system and reduce the risk of infections. Practicing good hygiene by washing hands frequently, especially during flu season, is essential. Avoiding close contact with sick individuals can help prevent infections. Staying physically active through regular exercise boosts immunity. Getting enough sleep, ideally 7–9 hours per night, supports overall health. Managing stress through relaxation techniques like meditation or yoga can further enhance immune function.

People with existing health conditions should take extra precautions. Keeping chronic diseases like diabetes, heart disease, and lung disease under control reduces the risk of complications. Adhering to prescribed medications ensures better management of underlying conditions. Smoking weakens the lungs and increases vulnerability to infections. Quitting smoking helps prevent lung damage and lowers the risk of severe respiratory illnesses. Avoiding secondhand smoke is equally important, as exposure can also increase susceptibility to pneumococcal disease and other lung conditions.
