I am 35. What are the splenectomy vaccination guidelines?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 35-year-old man recovering from a splenectomy following a car accident last year. Recently, I have developed a fever and chills, along with a persistent cough and shortness of breath. I know that people without a spleen are more vulnerable to pneumococcal infections, so I am concerned this could be pneumonia or sepsis.

  1. Should I have received a vaccination after my surgery?

  2. What steps should I take now to address these symptoms?

Kindly help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have read your query and can understand your concern.

At reputable centers, it is common practice to vaccinate patients with pneumococcal and flu vaccines either before or during the perioperative period (around the time of the splenectomy), if possible. I recommend reviewing your medical records and discharge notes to verify if these vaccines were administered.

As you have had a splenectomy, you are at a higher risk for pneumococcal infections, and it is important to manage this risk carefully. If you have not already been vaccinated with the pneumococcal and flu vaccines, I recommend scheduling them four weeks after recovery from your current illness.

Consider doing the following tests to monitor your condition:

  1. Complete blood count (CBC).

  2. Erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR).

  3. Random blood sugar (RBS).

  4. C-reactive protein (CRP).

  5. Chest X-ray (PA view): To check for any lung-related issues.

Please follow these lifestyle changes:

  1. Hydration: Drink plenty of water throughout the day to support proper body function.

  2. Sleep: Aim for seven to eight hours of sleep each night to help boost your immune system.

  3. Exercise: Try to engage in moderate exercise, such as brisk walking, for at least 30 minutes daily.

  4. Stress management: Practice relaxation techniques such as meditation, deep breathing, or yoga.

  5. Healthy eating: Focus on whole, unprocessed foods, including fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats.

Pranayama Yoga can also be beneficial if practiced daily to support both physical and mental well-being. Lastly, please avoid any addictive substances, as they can further compromise your immune system.

I hope this answers your query.

Please let me know if I can assist you further.

Thank you.
