How to prevent pneumonia in winter?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I hope you can help me with my dad's situation. He is 57 years old and just recovered from pneumonia last month. He has been doing better, but I am worried he might get sick again because the weather is getting cold. He has always had weak lungs, especially in winter. Is there anything we should do to help prevent it from coming back, like vitamins or special breathing exercises? I keep the house warm, but he still says he feels cold sometimes. Please let me know if there are any extra precautions we should be taking.

Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Considering your dad's history of pneumonia and weak lungs, it is great that you are taking proactive steps to prevent another episode. Here are some suggestions:

Precautions:

1. Flu vaccination: Ensure your dad gets the flu shot to prevent influenza, which can lead to pneumonia.

2. Pneumococcal vaccination: Consult with his doctor about getting the pneumococcal vaccine, which protects against pneumonia.

3. Warm clothing: Dress him in warm, layered clothing, especially when going outside.

4. Humidifier: Use a humidifier to maintain a comfortable humidity level at home, relieving dryness in the lungs.

5. Air purification: Consider using an air purifier to reduce airborne pathogens and pollutants.

Breathing exercises:

1. Diaphragmatic breathing: Encourage your dad to practice deep, belly-breathing exercises to strengthen his lungs.

2. Pursed-lip breathing: Teach him pursed-lip breathing to slow down his breathing rate and increase oxygen intake.

Nutrition and supplements

1. Balanced diet: Ensure he eats a nutritious diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins.

2. Vitamin C: Encourage him to take vitamin C supplements or consume foods high in vitamin C, like citrus fruits and leafy greens.

I hope this helps.

Kindly follow up if you have more concerns.

Thank you.
