Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 60-year-old male and I know the importance of the pneumococcal vaccine in preventing pneumonia, particularly caused by streptococcus pneumoniae. Could you please provide information on the risks associated with pneumonia, especially at my age? What are the key benefits and effectiveness of the pneumococcal vaccine in preventing this type of pneumonia? Additionally, are there any specific considerations or potential side effects I should be aware of before getting vaccinated?

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Pneumonia is an infection in your lungs caused by bacteria, viruses, or fungi. Pneumonia causes your lung tissue to swell (inflammation) and can cause fluid or pus in your lungs. Bacterial pneumonia is usually more severe than viral pneumonia, which often resolves on its own. Pneumonia can affect one or both lungs. Pneumonia can be very serious and can cause death. Complications from pneumonia include respiratory failure, sepsis, and lung abscesses which are more likely to affect older adults, young children, those with a weakened immune system, and people with other medical problems. Good health habits can fight pneumonia.

Vaccination: The PCV20 dose should be given at least 5 years after the last pneumococcal vaccine. Their vaccines are then complete. The second dose of PPSV23 should be given at least 8 weeks after PCV13 and 5 years after PPSV23. No additional pneumococcal vaccines are recommended until at least age 65 years.

Pneumococcal vaccine side effects:

  1. Feeling drowsy.
  2. Loss of appetite.
  3. Sore or swollen arm from the shot.
  4. Fever.
  5. Headache.

I hope this helps. Thank you.
