Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I am 36-year-old and I have had a severe cough for the past one month but that is not continuously present. Can pneumonia cause these kinds of symptoms? I want to get tested for pneumonia. What tests should be done, and at what time of day - morning or evening? What diet should I follow to protect myself from pneumococcal diseases
Last night, I vomited twice due to a severe cold and cough. I took steam with some herbs but still after that I vomited and the mucus all came out along with the food. Then I suffered for a while to sleep, then had a good sleep. I have some resistant power in my body but still wants to protect me from diseases so I need to boost my immunity.
Please help.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I understand your concern.
It sounds like you have been dealing with a persistent cough and other symptoms that could be due to a variety of causes, including pneumonia.
Pneumonia can indeed cause a cough which is often accompanied by fever, chest pain, and shortness of breath. However, a chronic or recurrent cough can also be caused by other issues like asthma, bronchitis, allergies, or postnasal drip. Given your recent vomiting due to a severe cold and cough, it is important to consider all possibilities.
Tests for pneumonia
If you suspect pneumonia, the best diagnostic tests include:
Chest X-ray: This is the most common test for diagnosing pneumonia. It shows the lungs and can reveal infection or fluid in the lungs.
Sputum test: If you are coughing up mucus, a sample can be tested to check for bacteria or viruses.
Blood tests: These can help determine if there is an infection in your body by checking for elevated white blood cell count or specific markers of infection.
Timing of tests: The time of day is not usually a concern for these tests. If you are getting a sputum sample, it is often best to do it first thing in the morning because that is when mucus production is highest. Blood tests and X-rays can be done at any time of day.
Diet and other steps to protect against pneumonia. Those include:
Vitamin C-rich foods can boost immunity.
Probiotics: Yogurt, kefir, and fermented foods like sauerkraut support gut health, which is closely linked to immune function.
Hydration: Drink plenty of water to keep your respiratory system hydrated and to thin out mucus.
Regular exercise: Moderate exercise like walking or yoga helps improve circulation and immunity.
Adequate sleep: Ensure you get seven to nine hours of sleep per night, as sleep is essential for recovery.
Stress management: Chronic stress can weaken the immune system, so practices like meditation, deep breathing, or mindfulness can help.
I hope this has helped you. Please feel free to reach me again, in case of further queries.
Thank you.
