What causes a sharp, stinging sensation while treating pneumonia?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am currently being treated for pneumonia with a nebulizer and a Z-pack. It is been six days, but the sharp stinging sensation in my back around the left shoulder blade is getting worse. What could be causing this pain? Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

The sharp, stinging sensation you are feeling around your left shoulder blade could be related to nerve irritation caused by the phrenic nerve, which supplies both the diaphragm and the shoulder area. During a respiratory infection like pneumonia, inflammation or irritation around the diaphragm can sometimes cause referred pain that manifests in the shoulder or upper back.

As your pneumonia improves with treatment, this tingling or sharp sensation should gradually subside as well. It is important to complete your course of antibiotics, as this will help clear the infection.

Keep track of your CRP (C-reactive protein) levels and total leukocyte count (TLC) through blood tests. These markers can give you a clearer picture of how your infection is responding to treatment.

In some cases, pneumonia can develop complications that may require more intensive treatment, such as intravenous antibiotics or hospitalization.

I hope this helps.

Thank you and take care.
