Does polio still persist in many countries?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I want to understand why I need to have a polio clearance to get a visa to a certain country. Has polio not been eradicated from most countries? I need to fly to another country and the visa is on hold as I have not got the proof of having been vaccinated for polio. If the disease has been eradicated what is the need for showing progress? Also, if I am not wrong one can easily identify a person with polio. Please guide me on how to proceed.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Polio clearance or proof of vaccination is often required for visa purposes as a precautionary measure to prevent the possible spread of the disease to the country you are visiting, even if polio has been eradicated from most countries.

Polio, or poliomyelitis, is a highly infectious disease caused by the poliovirus. Although global efforts have significantly reduced its prevalence, the disease still exists in some parts of the world. Therefore, countries that have successfully eradicated polio want to ensure that travelers coming from polio-affected regions do not introduce the virus to their populations.

The requirement for polio clearance is not necessarily based on the assumption that you have polio, but rather to ensure that you are not a carrier of the virus. Carriers can unknowingly transmit the virus to others, especially in places where the disease has been eradicated.

To proceed, you should contact the embassy or consulate of the country you plan to visit for specific information on their polio clearance requirements. They may accept a polio vaccination certificate showing that you have received the recommended doses, or they might require a polio blood test to confirm immunity. Make sure to follow their guidelines and provide the necessary documentation to get your visa processed smoothly.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.

Regards.
