What causes prolonged bleeding after a tooth extraction?
Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
My child had a tooth extraction in the evening, and the bleeding has not stopped since. I am worried because it is several hours, and blood is still coming from the extraction site. I have tried having them bite down on gauze, but it does not seem to help much. Is this normal, or should I be concerned? What should I do next?
Kindly help.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I can understand your concern.
It is important to use ice packs right away. Ice can help stop the bleeding both externally and internally at the extraction site by promoting clotting. If your child also had a pulpectomy or root canal on a nearby tooth, please consult your local dentist immediately since the bleeding has not stopped.
You can also try applying vitamin E oil to the extraction area for faster healing. This platform only offers a second opinion, so you should definitely see your dentist as soon as possible. If needed, you can search for a maxillofacial surgeon in your area, as they specialize in dental surgeries and can help control the bleeding effectively. Make sure your child gets plenty of rest and drinks water, and consider using a cotton ball or dental gauge at the bleeding site. Please visit a dentist or maxillofacial surgeon without delay, as ongoing bleeding is not safe.
Please let me know if there is anything else that I can help you with.
Thank you.
Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
Thank you for the reply.
I have vitamin E now. Can we use hemostatic matrix for the child?
Kindly help.
Hello,
Welcome back toicliniq.com.
I read your query and can understand your concern.
Yes, you can use it. But please take your child for a follow-up. Check-up at the clinic as soon as possible tomorrow. Make sure the extraction site is properly clotting during the visit.
I hope this helps.
Thank you and take care.

Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
Thank you for the reply.
Can we apply the hemostatic matrix directly in the mouth, or are there any issues if the kid swallows it?
Kindly help.
Hello,
Welcome back toicliniq.com.
I read your query and can understand your concern.
Apply vitamin E first and see. If it does not stop, then just visit an emergency physician.
I do not think you should experiment with hemostatic matrix alone (Blood stop IX is a hemostatic agent, which means it is used to help stop bleeding) because such bleeding is unusual. It should stop just with cotton and vitamin E or chlorhexidine.
I hope this helps.
Thank you and take care.
Regards
