What causes pain even after five days of tooth removal?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I had a tooth removed five days ago. I took antibiotics before the removal but not after. I had heavy bleeding for ten hours. Since the numbing wore off I have been in pain and taking medicine every two hours to help with the pain.

The blood clot is still there, with no pus, no fever, or anything. I am just in a lot of pain and unsure of what to do. Currently, I am taking Tylenol and Motrin.

Kindly help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have gone through your query and understand your concern.

As per your history, it looks like there is either a root stump left or, most probably, there is a sharp bony chip or edge that is causing pain. The second reason may be a dry socket (burning pain, whitish socket with a foul smell). In some cases, a small blood clot that normally forms in the socket after extraction may get dislodged or fail to form properly, which can lead to this condition and increase discomfort.

Hope my answer helps.

Kindly revert for further queries.

Thank you.
