What can I use for my post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) and am looking for budget-friendly skincare options that can help fade the dark spots. I am on a tight budget and want products that are effective but affordable.

  1. Could you please suggest what ingredients or specific products I can use safely to improve PIH?

  2. What order should they be used in my routine?

  3. How long might it take to see results?

Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have read your query, and thank you for your question.

And I completely understand how frustrating post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) can be. It is something many people deal with, especially after acne or inflammation.

I am going to give you a step-by-step budget-friendly skincare regimen to manage your post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (darkened skin, such as brown, black, or tan patches, that appear after skin inflammation or injury, like acne, eczema, burns, or bug bites, due to excess melanin production as the skin heals).

Use a gentle daily cleanser. Use a mild, non-stripping face wash to keep your skin calm and avoid further irritation. Use twice a day, only in the morning and before going to bed.

Sunscreen is the most important step to further avoid PIH. Daily SPF (sun protection factor) is the most important thing that prevents post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) from getting darker and helps it fade faster. Reapply every two to three hours if you are in the sun.

You must go for targeted PIH treatments with the active ingredients. For this, I am going to give you two ingredients, one in the morning and one at night. In the morning, use magnesium ascorbyl phosphate five percent cream (a stable vitamin C derivative) after moisturizer and before sunblock to manage your pigmentation.

In the evening, use a pea-sized amount of 20 percent Azelaic acid cream on the entire face, followed by a moisturizer. This is a gentle at-home daily peel, and it helps to break the old pigmentation gradually. Start with alternate nights for two weeks and then every night for an additional two weeks.

I hope this answers your query.

Please let me know if I can assist you further.

Thank you.
