How to manage recurring itchy skin flare-ups and irritation?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 36-year-old female, and I have noticed that every allergic reaction I have tends to appear as eczema. My father's family has a history of the condition. I never had eczema as a child or young adolescent, but I have started experiencing occasional flare-ups as an adult. The current flare-up I am dealing with is spreading quickly, is very itchy, and has not responded to treatment. I have taken Griseofulvin tablets and used topical combination creams (containing antifungal, antibacterial, and steroid ingredients), sulfur-based creams, herbal soap, and herbal creams, but none have been effective. I would be grateful for advice on what treatment options might help at this stage.

Kindly advise.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Based on your symptoms, it seems unlikely that you have eczema, especially since the skin condition has not responded to antimicrobial treatments. I strongly suspect that you may have developed atopic dermatitis, possibly triggered by a history of allergic reactions. For now, please discontinue any current medications.

You may consider starting one of the following treatments:

  1. Topical Tacrolimus 0.1% cream.

  2. Clobetasol Propionate 0.05% ointment once daily.

  3. Hydrocortisone 0.2% cream twice daily, continued for up to one month.

I hope you are satisfied with my answer. For further queries, you can consult me at iCliniq.

Thank you.
