Is heavy bleeding normal for a month after an abortion?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I had an abortion a month ago, and I got the contraceptive implant a week ago. I have never stopped bleeding since the abortion, but it has gotten worse this week. For the past two days, the heavy bleeding has been constant, but before that, it would come in big gushes.

I do not have a fever, cramps, or large blood clots.

Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have gone through your query and understand your concern.

Abortion pills should only be taken under a doctor's supervision up to seven weeks of pregnancy because they may cause infection, severe bleeding, and retained products of conception.

Since you have been bleeding continuously for one month and the bleeding has become heavier after the contraceptive implant insertion, this needs proper medical evaluation.

Irregular or prolonged bleeding can sometimes occur after an abortion as well as after starting a contraceptive implant, especially during the first few months. However, persistent heavy bleeding should not be ignored.

Your symptoms may suggest low hemoglobin, so please get your hemoglobin tested, as there can be significant blood loss during the abortion process.

At present, please monitor for the following warning signs:

  1. Soaking two or more pads per hour for more than two hours.

  2. Severe abdominal pain or cramping.

  3. Fever or foul-smelling discharge.

  4. Dizziness, fainting, or shortness of breath.

  5. Passage of large clots.

If any of these symptoms occur, kindly visit the emergency department immediately.

Kindly book an appointment for a prescription, as this is a prescription medication.

Have you had an ultrasound done to check whether the uterus is clear, since you are still bleeding?

  1. Are you a thyroid patient?

  2. Do you have any other medical problems?

  3. Is this your first pregnancy?

  4. Are you taking any medications?

Please answer these questions and share your reports so I can guide you further regarding the next course of action.

I hope I have answered your question.

Let me know if I can assist you further.

Thank you.
