What causes bleeding after Mefenamic acid and Tranexamic acid?
Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
My period was around 15 to 20 days late. Once I got it, the bleeding was extremely light, but it suddenly became heavier. I have now been bleeding continuously for 17 days. The general physician prescribed Mefenamic acidand Tranexamic acid to stop the bleeding.
I am still bleeding. What to do?
Please help.
Thank you.
Hi,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I have gone through your query and understand your concern.
Since you have been bleeding for 17 days despite taking Tranexamic acid and Mefenamic acid, it is essential to investigate the underlying cause.
Possible causes of prolonged bleeding:
-
Hormonal imbalance (PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome), thyroid issues).
-
Fibroids or polyps (can cause irregular, prolonged bleeding).
-
Endometrial hyperplasia (thickening of the uterus lining).
Side effects of Sertraline (can sometimes impact menstrual cycles): Bleeding disorders (if you have a history of easy bruising or prolonged bleeding).
What to do next?
Consult a gynecologist immediately - You may need additional tests, like:
-
Pelvic ultrasound to check for fibroids, cysts, or endometrial issues.
-
Hormonal tests (FSH (follicular stimulating hormone), LH (luteinizing hormone), prolactin, thyroid panel).
-
CBC (complete blood count) and iron studies to check for anemia from prolonged bleeding.
Possible medication adjustments you might need:
-
Progesterone therapy (like Norethisterone) to stop bleeding.
-
Higher-dose Tranexamic acid under medical supervision.
-
Iron supplementation if you are becoming anemic.
Monitor for signs of anemia, If you feel dizzy, weak, or have a rapid heartbeat, seek urgent medical care.
Since the bleeding has not stopped despite treatment, do not wait too long to seek specialized care. A gynecologist can provide targeted treatment based on the exact cause. Let me know if you need more advice!
