Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I just want to know if it is normal to experience sharp, pinch-like pains on the right side under my belly, where the uterus is, at eight weeks pregnant. The pain is not intense; it comes and goes. I am not bleeding or having any other symptoms. I just want to know if this is normal or if I should go to my local emergency room.
Please help.
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I can understand your concern.
Thank you for sharing these details. Based on what you have described, occasional mild, sharp, or pinch-like pains on one side of the lower abdomen during early pregnancy, such as at eight weeks, can be normal.
Here is a breakdown of possible causes and when to seek medical care:
One common cause is round ligament pain. As your uterus grows, the ligaments that support it stretch, which can cause quick, sharp twinges often felt on one side. This sensation may feel like a sudden pinch or pulling and usually comes and goes.
Another cause could be implantation-related stretching or general uterine growth. At eight weeks, the uterus is still expanding, and you may experience stretching or cramping sensations that can be dull or sharp.
Gas or bowel movement issues can also cause discomfort. As the intestines shift during pregnancy, trapped gas may mimic uterine pain and is commonly felt on one side.
Although these causes are usually normal, it is important to seek urgent medical care if you experience severe or persistent pain, pain accompanied by bleeding or spotting, shoulder pain, dizziness, fainting, fever, or chills. Also, if you have a history or risk of ectopic pregnancy, even though it is less likely at eight weeks without major symptoms, you should contact your healthcare provider immediately. For now, it is best to rest and avoid sudden movements that may strain the ligaments. Stay hydrated and keep track of any changes in your pain or other symptoms. Avoid taking any medication without your provider’s advice.
In summary, what you are describing likely falls within the range of normal pregnancy discomfort, especially since there is no bleeding or severe pain. However, trust your instincts if anything worsens or feels off; call your obstetrician or visit urgent care for evaluation.
I hope this helps.
Thank you.
