Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I am currently 30 weeks pregnant and 32 years old. I am concerned about potential heart complications of pregnancy and birth defects. I have read that certain conditions can increase risks for both the mother and baby. Are there specific signs or symptoms I should be watching for regarding heart issues or developmental problems? What steps can I take to minimize these risks and ensure a healthy pregnancy and baby? Are there particular tests or screenings I should request from my healthcare provider at this stage?
Please help.
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com
I understand your concern.
Palpitations occur frequently during pregnancy and are a common indication for cardiac evaluation. The differential diagnosis of palpitations is extensive and the diagnostic evaluation of pregnant individuals with palpitations does not differ from that in non-pregnant patients.
Electrocardiogram — Normal anatomic and physiologic changes of the heart and chest wall during pregnancy cause changes in the electrocardiogram that are unrelated to the disease.
The heart is rotated toward the left, resulting in a 15 to 20-degree left axis deviation.
Sinus tachycardia is common, as the heart rate increases approximately 10 percent above baseline values.
Premature ventricular or atrial ectopic beats may be seen in 50 to 60 percent of pregnant patients presenting with palpitations and generally resolve spontaneously after delivery.
Kindly follow up if you have more concerns.
I hope this helps.
Regards.
Thank you.
