Can drinking water affect pregnancy test results?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I got seven positive pregnancy tests over the last few days. I am still late for my period with no signs of bleeding. I have been using the bathroom around 3 am. I got up this morning to check my line progression, but the test was negative. I did not drink any water for three hours because I was sleeping. However, I drank lots of water before bed last night.

Is it possible my line is not progressing because I drank too much water before bed?

I have a blood test this morning, but I am kind of worried about seeing no line progression.

Please help.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have gone through your query and understand your concern.

It is understandable to feel concerned, but the situation you are describing is common. Drinking a lot of water before bed may dilute your urine, which can affect the accuracy of home pregnancy tests, especially in the early stages of pregnancy. A negative result after multiple positives is likely due to diluted urine, which decreases the concentration of the pregnancy hormone (hCG or human chorionic gonadotropin) that the test detects.

Since you have consistently had positive tests and are still late for your period, the lack of progression in the test this morning may not be a cause for concern. The blood test you are getting today will give a much more accurate reading of your hCG levels and confirm the pregnancy.

In the meantime:

  1. Try not to worry too much about the home test results, as they can fluctuate based on various factors like hydration.

  2. We will monitor your hCG levels through the blood test to ensure they are rising appropriately.

It is great that you are getting a blood test this morning—this will give you a more definitive answer. If you have further concerns after receiving your results, be sure to discuss them with me.

    Thank you.
