I am 36. Can I rely on a urine test to confirm pregnancy?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have had severe stomach pain for the past week. On my 25th day, I tested a home pregnancy kit; it showed a faint second line after a few minutes, and the line has not disappeared till now. But on the 27th day, when I tested, there was no line seen in one kit, and in another, only one line. Why is this happening, doctor? I am 36 years old and want to get pregnant for the third time. I also usually have a 28-day cycle, which is always regular.

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

Based on your descriptions, you have experienced some inconsistencies in your home pregnancy test results. Home pregnancy tests detect the presence of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) in your urine, a hormone produced during pregnancy. The concentration of hCG in your urine increases as your pregnancy progresses. Given that you have seen different results on different days, it could be due to several factors:

1. Test Sensitivity: Different pregnancy tests have varying sensitivity levels. Some tests can detect hCG earlier than others. It is possible that the test you used on the 25th day was more sensitive than the one you used on the 27th day, leading to a different result.

2. Timing of Testing: The accuracy of a pregnancy test can be affected by when you take it in relation to ovulation. If you tested too early on the 27th day, there might not have been enough hCG in your system to produce a visible line.

3. Testing Method: Inconsistencies in how you performed the tests could also affect the results. Make sure to follow the instructions carefully, including the recommended waiting time for reading the results.

4. Pregnancy Status: It is also possible that your pregnancy test results are inconsistent due to changes in your hormone levels or a false positive. Only a healthcare professional can confirm your pregnancy through a blood test or an ultrasound.

I hope I have answered your question.

Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards.
