Is there an option to avoid pregnancy after a positive test?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My partner and I had a moment before seven days of ovulation, and now she is pregnant, and she has an infection. Today she checked by taking a pregnancy test, it shows a positive result.

  • Is there any option to avoid pregnancy?

  • Is there any medicine or natural way to avoid it?

Kindly advise.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have read your query and understand your concern.

As she is already pregnant now, and as I understand that the pregnancy is not desired, the next best option is termination of pregnancy by the medical method under a gynecologist’s supervision only. Please do not take any MTP (medical termination of pregnancy pills) over the counter, as that can harm her.

She should visit a gynecologist or a registered MTP clinic. The doctor will advise an ultrasound of the pelvis to rule out ectopic pregnancy or confirm the intrauterine location of the pregnancy. Along with this, a complete blood count and blood group test are mandatory before prescribing medical termination pills.

The reason for supervision is to ensure proper support during excessive bleeding, which can occur during the process, and to confirm complete abortion.

I hope this helps. Please visit your gynecologist and make an informed decision. Unfortunately, MTP cannot be prescribed online as it is not legal.

I hope you are satisfied with my answer. For further queries, you can consult me at iCliniq.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

She has also taken the contraceptive pill within 72 hours. She is also taking medicines for a skin infection. Will this affect the pregnancy test? The medicine given was Entederm.

Kindly advise.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I have read your query and understand your concern.

The pill will not work now as she has already become pregnant. Levonorgestrel is a progesterone-based pill, and in this situation, it will not terminate the pregnancy.

I hope you are satisfied with my answer. For further queries, you can consult me at iCliniq.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

She took the contraceptive pill within six to seven hours after intercourse. I also want to know about her skin infection. Is there any chance that the medicines or infection can affect the pregnancy test results?

Kindly advise.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have read your query and understand your concern.

In this case, the pregnancy has likely occurred due to contraceptive pill failure. Entederm is meant for local application and does not interfere with urine pregnancy test results.

However, if there is any doubt regarding the home pregnancy test, the most reliable method is a serum beta human chorionic gonadotropin test (hCG). If the hCG level is more than 5 mIU/mL, it confirms pregnancy.

I hope you are satisfied with my answer. For further queries, you can consult me at iCliniq.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Is there any natural way or home remedy to avoid pregnancy?

Kindly advise.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have read your query and understand your concern.

Unfortunately, there are no natural remedies that are fully effective or safe for terminating a pregnancy. Such methods are not reliable and may lead to incomplete abortion or complications, so they are not advisable.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I want to confirm how many days she is pregnant. Her last period was earlier, and we had intercourse later. How many days of pregnancy is it now?

Kindly advise.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have read your query and understand your concern.

Pregnancy is calculated from the first day of the last menstrual period. Based on the dates provided, she is approximately six weeks and three days pregnant. This can be further confirmed by an ultrasound of the pelvis.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Today, my partner’s skin infection has improved. She took five different pregnancy tests this morning, and all were negative. Each test showed a single line.

Kindly advise.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have read your query and understand your concern.

It is advisable to get a serum beta hCG test done to conclusively rule out pregnancy. If previous tests were positive and current urine pregnancy tests are negative, a blood test will help remove any doubt and provide a definitive result.
