How to manage labor pain and childbirth process?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am 29 years old and pregnant. I am in my eighth month now and taking all the necessary medications. My scan reports are normal, and my baby in the womb is also healthy. However, I am worried about the pain during childbirth. Will it be very painful? Will my pelvis lose strength after childbirth? Are there ways to improve the strength of the pelvis for childbirth? How to ease childbirth?

Please give your suggestions.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Labor pain is painful, but there are some maneuvers, such as breathing exercises and diversional measures, that can minimize the pain. These would help reduce the severity of pain during labor. The pharmacological technique for reducing pain is the use of epidural anesthesia. This, however, requires specialized care. So, you would be fine as your birth attendant would help you overcome pain during the labor process. Pregnancy hormones loosen the strength of the pelvic structure. However, the strength is regained back after delivery. Additionally, Kegel's exercise will help to increase the strength of the pelvic muscle. It should commence during pregnancy and resume within 24 hours after delivery.

I hope this information helps you.

Thank you.
