How to prevent pregnancy and what medication to take?
Patient's Query
Hi doctor,
My wife got her latest period last month, as per the ovulation tracking app, her probable ovulation was a few days back. We did unprotected intercourse after that, but on all three occasions, we never discharged inside. I withdraw well before ejaculation, and I was not using a condom. To be on the safer side, she took an I-pill the next morning.
What are the chances of her getting pregnant? Her age is 39, and mine is 42. We do not want a pregnancy now as we already have an 11-year-old son. She was not having any other contraceptive measures going on. She stopped taking the Choice tablet last month. Please guide us on this.
Thanks.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I can understand your concern.
There are things that I want to tell you:
-
With increasing age, fertility chances are decreased but not completely gone.
-
There are pre-discharge secretions in males that can also contain sperm and make a female pregnant.
-
Emergency contraception should not be taken frequently; it is alright if you use it three to four times a year.
-
I-pill (Levonorgestrel) can never guarantee to work every time because ovulation happens before it.
So, now coming to the concern, there can be a possibility of pregnancy, so I would suggest you get blood beta hCG (human chorionic gonadotrophin) done. And you can also book my video consultation. If it is negative, then we can plan for further tests to find the cause.
I hope this information will help you.
Thanks.
Patient's Query
Hi doctor,
Thanks for the reply.
This morning she got her period.
Hello,
Welcome back to icliniq.com.
I can understand your concern.
I would request you to tell your wife to please take long-acting contraception as an implant in the arm or an IUD (intrauterine device), so she can have intercourse without fear of getting pregnant.
I hope this information will be helpful to you.
Thanks.
