What could cause premature rupture of the membrane?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am 26 weeks pregnant. Today when I went to the toilet and while I was pooping too hard I felt like a lot of liquid coming out at once and I do not know what it is? What could that possibly be?

Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Well, I am concerned about your worries. This can be PROM (premature rupture of the membrane) which can be a high-risk pregnancy. Can you tell us the amount of leaking you had? What was the color of the fluid? What about the smell of fluid was it different from urine because the liquor has a special order? You need to visit your obstetrician to rule out PROM, some patients can mix with urination and vaginal discharge, for such cases obstetricians will take history, and if suspected PROM they will perform a general physical examination which they will check the pulse, temperature, abdominal examination. Then she will do a vaginal examination where she will inspect to check the amount of leaking, color, and smell. Lastly, she will carry out a sterile speculum examination where she will see liquor coming off the cervix if the leak is positive. You need to wear a sterile pad and visit your obstetrician as soon as possible.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.
