Why does my sister feel depressed before her periods at 27?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I wanted to ask about my sister’s health. She is 27 years old, and she has been facing weird symptoms just before her menstruation. She gets depressed, sad, irritated, and has sweet cravings. What would be the issues? Should this be addressed immediately? Will this affect her fertility in any way? Please clarify and help her get relief from such symptoms.

Kindly suggest.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern for your sister.

These symptoms are associated with premenstrual syndrome (PMS). PMS does not affect fertility but could affect the quality of her social life. Good sleep, stress management, and taking supplements rich in magnesium, calcium, and vitamin B6 can help reduce the severity of symptoms. If she can exercise and avoid alcohol and caffeine, it also helps. However, if symptoms persist or worsen, she would need to come to the ER (emergency room) for proper evaluation and treatment to improve the quality of her social life. I hope this helps you.

Thank you.
