Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I recently found out I am HIV positive, and I am devastated. I am 32, married, and we were planning to start a family soon. My biggest fear is whether I can still have a healthy pregnancy and protect my future child from getting infected. I have also been on birth control pills for years. Should I stop them now? I do not want to do anything that might complicate my condition further. Is birth control safe while being HIV positive? Do antiretroviral medications affect menstrual cycles or fertility?
Please advise.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com
I read your query and understand your concern.
Pregnancy and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV):
Antiretroviral therapy (ART): ART can significantly reduce the risk of mother-to-child transmission of HIV.
Pregnancy planning: It is essential to work closely with your healthcare provider to plan a safe and healthy pregnancy.
Birth control and HIV :
1) Consult your healthcare provider: Discuss your birth control options with your healthcare provider, considering your HIV status and any medications you are taking.
2) Interactions between ART and birth control: Some ART medications may interact with certain birth control methods, so it is crucial to discuss this with your healthcare provider.
Menstrual cycles and fertility :
ART and menstrual cycles: Some ART medications may affect menstrual cycles, but this is not typically a significant concern.
HIV does not necessarily affect fertility by itself, and with proper management, people with HIV can conceive and have healthy children.
Hope this answers your query.
Thank you.
