I am 28, female. Is my allergic rhinitis due to asthma?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am a 28-year-old woman who has been struggling with persistent nasal congestion, sneezing, and itchy, watery eyes for the past two years, especially during spring and after exposure to dust or pet dander.

My symptoms worsen at night, making it difficult to sleep, and I often wake up with a dry, irritated throat. Recent blood tests show mildly elevated eosinophils (seven percent) and a total IgE of 350 IU/mL.

I also have a history of mild asthma, which sometimes worsens during allergy flare-ups. Over-the-counter antihistamines provide only temporary relief, and nasal corticosteroid sprays help partially but do not fully control the symptoms.

I am concerned about frequent sinus infections and skin flare-ups on my face due to constant rubbing. Could my allergic rhinitis be linked to my asthma and skin issues? Should I consider allergy testing or immunotherapy, and are there lifestyle or environmental changes that could significantly reduce my symptoms?

Please suggest.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

You have been dealing with a very frustrating and exhausting combination of symptoms, and given your history, your description strongly suggests chronic allergic rhinitis that is likely linked to your asthma and skin sensitivity. Allergic rhinitis, asthma, and certain types of eczema or skin irritation are all part of what is known as the “atopic triad,” meaning they often occur together due to a shared allergic or immune-related tendency.

Your elevated eosinophils and IgE (immunoglobulin E) levels further support an allergic basis for your condition.

When nasal inflammation remains uncontrolled, it can worsen asthma by increasing airway sensitivity and causing postnasal drip, which may lead to nighttime coughing or breathing difficulties.

Chronic rubbing and inflammation of the nasal and facial skin can also lead to eczema-like patches or irritation.

Since your symptoms are persistent and only partially relieved by over-the-counter medications and nasal sprays, allergy testing (either skin prick or blood testing) would be an important next step.

Identifying your specific triggers, such as dust mites, pollen, animal dander, or molds, can help guide both lifestyle adjustments and treatment. If strong sensitizations are found, allergen immunotherapy (through injections or tablets) can help retrain your immune system over time, offering longer-lasting relief and reducing dependence on medications.

Meanwhile, environmental control measures can make a real difference, and those include:

  • Using HEPA (high-efficiency particulate air) air purifiers.

  • Washing bedding in hot water weekly.

  • Keeping windows closed during high pollen seasons.

  • Avoiding pets in the bedroom, and

  • Regularly vacuuming with a HEPA filter can help reduce allergen exposure.

Saline nasal rinses can gently clear allergens from your nasal passages, and using a humidifier in dry weather may help prevent throat irritation.

It is also important to monitor your asthma closely, as good control of nasal allergies can significantly reduce asthma flare-ups.

You are not alone in this. Many people with overlapping allergies, asthma, and skin irritation find real improvement through a combination of targeted medical care and allergen avoidance.

I hope this has helped you.

Please feel free to reach out to me again for further queries.

Thank you.
