How to prevent antimicrobial resistance?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

It is very concerning, as my relative was just admitted to the hospital with pneumonia and pleurisy. What worries me is that, despite the treatment, they keep getting infections quite often. Could this be a sign of antimicrobial resistance developing? I am unsure how common that is, but it has been on my mind. Also, I was wondering if bringing my 3-year-old to visit them in the hospital was safe. I understand there might be some precautions we need to take, so I would appreciate any advice you could offer on that front as well.

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

Despite treatment, repeated infections can be a sign of antimicrobial resistance, so it is mandatory to have the patient physically examined by a treating doctor.

Regarding your 3-year-old visiting the hospital, it is generally safe as long as precautions are taken.

  1. Up-to-date on vaccinations.

  2. Wash their hands thoroughly before and after visiting the hospital.

  3. Limit physical contact with your relative if they have a contagious infection.

  4. Wear masks.

  5. Use hand sanitizer.

I hope this helps.

Thank you and take care.

Regards.
