How to overcome negative thoughts that lead to procrastination?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have experienced huge childhood trauma and I always had a “never say never” attitude. But currently, I am facing challenges and feel unlucky in life. My energy levels are massively low outside of work, and when I try to pursue my goals, there is an inner voice telling me not to do it. This feeling is so strong that it causes discomfort in my stomach and I end up procrastinating, achieving nothing. I have been experiencing bad luck for years and every decision I make proves to be the wrong one.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

It sounds like you have been through a lot, and understandably, you are feeling the effects of your past trauma. It is commendable that you have maintained a resilient attitude despite your challenges. However, it is also important to acknowledge the impact trauma can have on our mental and emotional well-being. Talking to a professional can help you process your experiences and develop coping strategies to overcome the voice of self-doubt and negativity. You should try to follow the below guidelines to deal with your problem. It will help you.

1) You should exercise daily for 30 to 45 minutes like at least going for a walk.

2) Do meditation for 20 minutes daily, just sit in one place in a comfortable position and try to concentrate on your normal breathing, do not stop or force yourself to stop your thoughts, just let it be.

3) Eat healthy home-cooked foods, and avoid junk foods.

4) Drink enough water.

5) You should spend quality time with friends and family daily or do video calls if you are living away from your family.

6) You should spend time on creative hobbies like reading good books, writing journals, painting, drawing, and learning new skills, languages, or musical instruments.

7) You should get seven to eight hours of sleep daily.

8) You must avoid tobacco, alcohol, or any substance abuse.

If you still have symptoms that persist after following the advice for four to six weeks, then you need to start medications. You must consult your nearest psychiatrist.

Remember, healing takes time and it is okay to ask for help along the way.

I hope that you get your answer.

Please, let me know if you want some help.

Thank you.
