When can I eat normal food after constipation and proctitis?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I was in the hospital this month because I was diagnosed with constipation and proctitis. For the first two days, I was only on a liquid diet, and after that, they asked me to continue with a soft diet. My concern is, when will it be safe for me to start eating normally again?

Since I am currently traveling in another state and my insurance does not cover out-of-network visits, I have not been able to follow up properly with a doctor.

As for my history, I have never had anything this severe before. In the past, I would sometimes get constipation or diarrhea, but I could usually manage it myself with Pepto bismol, Imodium, or Dulcolax. This was my first hospitalization for stomach issues.

Right now, I am still taking the prescribed medicines:

  1. Ciprofloxacin.

  2. Metronidazole.

  3. Docusate.

  4. Polyethylene glycol 3350.

Please help.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

After an episode of proctitis (inflammation of the rectum, the lower part of your intestines) and constipation, doctors usually suggest going back to normal foods slowly. You have already gone from liquids to a soft diet, so the next step is to gradually add in regular foods, depending on how your stomach and bowels respond.

Why this happened:

Your intestines were inflamed (proctitis) and blocked with constipation, so they needed rest and time to heal.

Tests to consider:

If you keep improving, no urgent tests are needed right now. But if you develop pain, bleeding, fever, or severe constipation again, your doctor may suggest a colonoscopy (a test where a thin tube with a camera looks inside your intestines).

Possible related conditions:

  • Irritable bowel flare is a gut condition that causes cramps and bowel changes.

  • Infective colitis, infection and swelling of the colon.

  • Medication irritation, sometimes drugs upset the bowel lining.

What is most likely: You are in the recovery phase after constipation with proctitis.

Treatment plan:

  • Continue your antibiotics (Ciprofloxacin and Metronidazole) as prescribed.

  • Keep taking your stool softener and PEG (Polyethylene glycol, a powder that helps draw water into the bowel for easier stools).

  • Start with bland foods like rice, boiled veggies, oats, or lean chicken/fish. If you tolerate them well for a few days (no pain, no diarrhea), you can return to a normal diet within one to two weeks.

  • For now, avoid fried foods, heavy dairy, alcohol, and very spicy meals.

Prevention tips:

  • Drink plenty of water.

  • Slowly add fiber (fruits, veggies, oats).

  • Stay active and avoid long gaps between meals.

When to seek help

Since you cannot see your treating doctor right now, watch for red flags:

  • Severe stomach pain.

  • Blood in stool.

  • Fever.

  • No bowel movement, even with medicines.

If any of these happen, get urgent care. Otherwise, book a follow-up with a gastroenterologist when you are back home to decide if more tests are needed.

I hope this helps.

Kindly revert so I can assist you further.

Thank you.
