Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I am 24 years old. I am worried about my periods, which currently last 21 days. Three days ago, it seemed as though it was stopping, but yesterday and today it seems as though it is the beginning of my period. Is there any reason to be more concerned? What should I do, and what might be the reason?
Kindly help.
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I read your query and understood your concern.
A period lasting 21 days longer is not normal, and it is reasonable to take it seriously, especially since this has never happened to you before. Sometimes a long period can be caused by a temporary hormonal imbalance, stress, weight changes, recent illness, or an ovulation problem.
Your weight is on the lower side for your height, and low body weight can sometimes make menstrual cycles irregular or prolonged. Other possible causes include thyroid issues, polyps, infection, or very early pregnancy-related changes.
Since your bleeding seemed to slow down and then start again, it would be helpful to check a pregnancy test and get some basic blood work, such as thyroid function and a complete blood count, to make sure you are not becoming anemic.
If the bleeding continues for more than a few more days, becomes heavier, or if you feel dizzy or weak, you should see a doctor soon for an examination and possibly an ultrasound.
Can you tell me whether the bleeding is light or heavy, if you have any clotting, and if you have had any recent stress, weight loss, or change in appetite?
I hope that this answers your query.
Kindly follow up if you have more doubts.
Thank you.
