How can I manage compulsive masturbation affecting daily life?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am 33, and I have a masturbation addiction problem. I find myself engaging in it very frequently, and it has started affecting my daily life.

I feel low on energy, distracted, and unable to focus on important things. Because of this, I have not been able to stay consistent with work, and currently, I do not have a job. My weight is around 154.3 pounds.

Could you please guide me on what steps I should take and whether I need any treatment or counseling?

Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have read your query and understand your concern.

I am truly worried about your concerns. I am happy that you voiced this concern. It takes courage. Many men find themselves in this predicament silently. The behavior that you have described is more of compulsive sexual behavior than just being addicted to masturbation. Compulsive sexual behavior is when one’s sexual desires become uncontrollable and affect work and personal life.

What matters is how often you masturbate. I noticed that you said it is having an impact on your work. That is significant. Once it starts impacting productivity, motivation, and self-confidence, it will be time for serious concern. Is the reason why you do this that you want to handle stress, loneliness, boredom, or anxiety? It may turn into a coping strategy, not just a habit. This is what really helps.

  1. Lower the triggers.

  2. Reduce access to pornography.

  3. Place the phone outside the bedroom.

  4. Don’t spend too much time alone and idle.

  5. Do some exercise every day – at least for 20 minutes.

  6. Take cold shower.

  7. Regular schedule with fixed waking up and sleeping time.

  8. Acquiring skills during moments of intense desire.

  9. Every time you have an urge, postpone it by 15 minutes.

If it seems uncontrollable, therapy works very well. A psychologist specializing in addiction or CBT (cognitive-behavioral therapy) may be able to help with this. Medicine will only be required in case of severe anxiety or depression. Being single at age 33 is definitely not a failure, nor is the lack of a job at this moment. But it is crucial to have some structure.

I hope you are satisfied with my answer. For further queries, you can consult me at iCliniq.

Thank you.
