Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I am concerned about my family history of psoriasis. Recently, I started developing an itchy rash on my hands near the elbow joint, especially when I eat seafood. Could this be an allergy or is it psoriasis? I am worried because I have seen my aunt suffer from psoriasis. How much does genetics contribute to this condition?
Kindly help.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I understand your concern.
Let me explain about psoriasis. Psoriasis is a condition where skin cells build up, forming scales and itchy, dry patches.
It is thought to be related to an immune system problem. Triggers include infections, stress, and cold weather. Psoriasis can be inherited as an autosomal dominant trait. If one parent has psoriasis, your risk of developing it increases. If both parents have it, the risk is even higher. Many genes may play a role, including IL23A, CX3CL1, and CX3CR1.
Triggers for psoriasis include infections, sunburn, injury, stress, smoking, alcohol, and cold, dry weather. Certain medications like Prednisone, Lithium, and Hydroxychloroquine can also trigger psoriasis.
Probable causes for psoriasis include stress.
Treatment plan:
Apply coal tar cream with salicylic acid to the affected areas at night.
Use paraffin cream to keep the skin moisturized.
Follow-up:
See a dermatologist to discuss PUVA (psoralen plus ultraviolet A) therapy and follow up in 15 days.
Preventive measures:
Avoid stress.
Keep your skin moisturized.
Drink three to four liters of water daily.
Practice yoga and meditation.
Try to identify any triggering factors.
I hope you are satisfied with my answer. For further queries, you can consult me at iCliniq.
