What is the best treatment for psoriasis while breastfeeding?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My wife, who is 35 years old. She has been dealing with psoriasis since her last pregnancy. The condition started on her stomach and has now spread to her arms and neck. She is concerned about taking medication while breastfeeding. She has tried natural remedies and special diets, but nothing has worked so far. The constant skin irritation is making her uncomfortable during feeding times, and her self-confidence has significantly decreased. She avoids going out with our baby, can not wear her favorite clothes, and feels restricted in her movements. The patches are red, inflamed, and sometimes crack and bleed. Could you suggest safe treatments that will not affect her breastfeeding?

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern.

Dealing with psoriasis during breastfeeding can be challenging, but safe and effective treatments are available. Gentle topical treatments, such as low-strength corticosteroids, calcineurin inhibitors like tacrolimus, and emollient-rich moisturizers, can help relieve symptoms without affecting breastfeeding. UVB (medium wavelength), phototherapy is another safe and effective option that she could consider with a dermatologist's guidance. Additionally, avoiding harsh soaps and keeping her skin well-moisturized can help reduce irritation and discomfort. Consulting a dermatologist is essential to create a tailored treatment plan that works for her.

Emotional support is equally important. Reassure her that she is doing an incredible job as a mom and remind her that psoriasis is manageable with the right care. Encourage her to prioritize her well-being, and let her know she is not alone in this journey. With proper treatment and support, she can regain her confidence and comfort.

I hope this helps you.

Thank you.
