What are the effects of untreated psoriatic arthritis?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have been wondering what happens if you do not treat psoriatic arthritis, because my grandfather has it, and it seems like it is getting worse. Psoriatic arthritis is linked to psoriasis, and it looks like it is causing a lot of joint pain for him. If he does not get proper treatment, will the arthritis just keep spreading to more joints? I am scared that if it gets worse, he will not be able to walk or move around easily anymore. What happens if you do not treat it- does it lead to some kind of disability? I do not know how effective the treatments are, but he is having a hard time, and I do not want to see it get worse if we can help it.

Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Potential consequences of untreated psoriatic arthritis:

  1. Progressive joint damage: Without treatment, inflammation can damage the joints and surrounding tissues, potentially leading to permanent changes in joint structure.

  2. Increased pain and stiffness: Symptoms like pain, stiffness, and swelling can worsen, making daily activities more challenging.

  3. Spread to more joints: PsA (psoriatic arthritis) can indeed affect more joints over time. It may start in a few joints and gradually involve more if not managed.

  4. Loss of mobility: Severe pain and joint damage can lead to decreased mobility, making walking and movement difficult. This can significantly impact the quality of life.

  5. Functional disability: Chronic joint damage may lead to disability, affecting the ability to perform everyday tasks and reducing independence.

  6. Associated conditions: PsA is linked to other health issues, such as cardiovascular disease, obesity, and mental health concerns, which can arise from chronic pain and reduced activity levels.

What can be done further:

  1. Encourage medical consultation: Urge your grandfather to see a rheumatologist for an evaluation and tailored treatment plan. Early and effective management is crucial.

  2. Supportive care: Help him with lifestyle changes, such as staying active within his limits, maintaining a healthy diet, and exploring pain relief options.

  3. Emotional support: Be there for him emotionally, as managing a chronic condition can be stressful. Encourage him to talk about his feelings and concerns.

Taking action now can make a significant difference in his health and quality of life. It is great that you are looking out for him, and encouraging him to seek appropriate care can help prevent further complications.

I hope this helps.

Kindly follow up if you have more concerns.

Thank you.
