What is the treatment for psoriatic arthritis in pregnancy?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am 32 weeks pregnant with psoriatic arthritis. My condition is getting worse each day. I had to stop all my regular medications when I got pregnant and now I can barely move my fingers. Morning stiffness lasts all day and skin is peeling off in sheets. My gynecologist says that my baby is smaller than normal. I also got gestational diabetes which limits what I can eat. My hands are swollen. Is this harming my baby? What should I do?

Please help me.

Thanks.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern.

Pregnancy is a known trigger for psoriasis flare-ups. Most available treatments are not safe during pregnancy. Another option is to deliver before term, the baby will stay in the incubator and have a better chance of survival. Also, you would start your psoriasis treatment. Gestational diabetes can be controlled with proper diet and medications. The psoriasis treatment includes topical steroids, Methotrexate, and the use of emollients and moisturizers. You can consult your gynecologist and get proper treatment with her consent.

I hope this information helps you.

Feel free to ask further queries.

Thank you.
