What role does psychedelic therapy play in depression?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My brother is going through a really tough time. He is 54 years old and recently lost his wife. He has been diagnosed with clinical depression and is seeking help, but I am worried about him. I have heard about different treatments for mental health issues, like psychotherapy, and now there is talk about psychedelic therapy, too. Can you tell me more about how these treatments work? My brother is experiencing a lot of sadness, and it is heartbreaking to see. I am especially curious about psychedelic therapy. Is it effective for treating depression, and how does it compare to traditional psychotherapy?

Kindly suggest.

Hello,

I am glad you chose icliniq for your medical-related queries.

I can understand your situation and your concern about your brother.

I am sorry to hear about his wife. He may have major depressive disorder. I am not sure about psychedelic therapy as it is not approved. He can try psychotherapy sessions, which can help him.

There are non-pharmacological management strategies for depression that he can try:

  1. He should exercise daily for 30 to 45 minutes, like going for a walk.
  2. He should practice meditation for 20 minutes daily.
  3. Eating healthy, home-cooked food and avoiding junk food is important.
  4. He must drink enough water.
  5. Spending quality time with friends and family daily can be beneficial.
  6. Engaging in creative hobbies like reading, writing journals, painting, drawing, and learning new skills, languages or musical instruments can help.
  7. Getting enough sleep, around seven to eight hours nightly, is crucial.
  8. Staying away from tobacco, alcohol, or any substance abuse is essential.
  9. Encourage him to find reasons to live his life fully, not just to spend it.

If your brother still has symptoms after following this advice for four to six weeks, he may need to start medications for a short duration.

I hope this has helped you. Please feel free to reach me again, in case of further queries.

Thank you.
