I have been advised SDS and PTA tests. What are they?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 62-year-old male who was advised to consult an audiologist about a suspected hearing issue during his last medical appointment and advised PTA and SDS. I want to know about PTA and SDS scores.

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

PTA stands for pure tone audiometry test. It is a test of your current hearing ability using pure tones of a single frequency.

SDS stands for speech discrimination score. Doctors use phonetically balanced words and see how much score you are getting. Based on the score, doctors interpret and correlate it with the pure tone audiometry test.

Based on your description, it would be presbycusis, and age-related causes are probable. The investigations to be done are PTA, impedance, and SDS, and the treatment plan would be a digital, programmable hearing aid.

I would suggest you avoid noise and take a neurovitamin tablet for one month.

Kindly consult a physician, discuss with them, and start taking the medications with their consent.

I hope I have answered your question.

Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards.
