RAEB (Refractory anemia with excess blasts) belongs to a group of rare blood disorders called myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS), which are characterized by abnormal production of blood cells that are immature or underdeveloped and have unusual shapes, sizes, and appearance. These are the juvenile, early versions of the blood cells called blast cells. It is of two types RAEB-1 and RAEB-2. RAEB is the higher-risk form of MDS.
