How to treat razor bumps and dark spots in the pubic area?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

What is the solution for razor bumps and hyperpigmentation in the pubic area? The darkening of the neck and inner thighs started last year, initially appearing as razor bumps after using a razor blade and shaving cream. Please help.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

From the information you have provided, it sounds like you may be dealing with hyperpigmented skin bumps as a result of folliculitis. It is an inflammation of the hair follicles. This condition is often caused by irritation or infection, and in your case, it appears to have been triggered by shaving with a razor blade and the use of shaving cream. Over time, if the folliculitis does not heal properly, it can lead to scarring and darkening (hyperpigmentation) of the affected skin.

The first step is to discontinue the use of razors in the area to prevent further irritation or injury. Instead, allow the skin to rest and recover. For treatment, I suggest using one of the following topical medications:

  1. Tacrolimus 0.2 percent cream.

  2. Clobetasol ointment 0.05 percent – Apply once daily.

  3. Hydrocortisone cream 0.2 percent – Apply twice daily,

Kindly consult your doctor and take medicines accordingly.

Use the chosen treatment consistently for a month. These topical creams can help reduce inflammation, lighten pigmentation, and promote healing of the skin.

I hope this helps.

Please revert in case of further queries.

Thank you.
