Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 76-year-old male, I have taken blood tonics, black strap molasses, and various minerals for my anemia. My doctor prescribed ferrous sulfate 325 mg tablets twice a day. I have taken it for over a month. So, I stopped that one until a blood test can be done to see also the amount of iron in the blood. What else can be done to correct the lack of red blood cells?

Kindly help.

Hello,

I appreciate that you have chosen icliniq.com for your medical needs.

I am here to give you the best care possible.

The body has a limited capacity to absorb iron. When needed, it will absorb more, and when not needed. So taking in excess will not damage the heart. In conditions like hemochromatosis, which is inherited, in those people, iron can increase and can deposit in the heart. You are having an iron deficiency, hence your doctor has prescribed ferrous sulfate. To continue with the treatment, as any anemia at this age is not good. Also, maintain good nutrition and avoid taking coffee or tea along with iron supplements. Take vitamin C or citrus fruits to improve iron absorption.

I hope this has helped you. Thank you.
