What further tests and treatment is required if a person has low RBC and high MCV?

Hello doctor,

I recently got some blood tests and am unsure of the test results. My RBC is low, and my MCV is high. Everything else seems normal. Are there any other tests to be done to figure out what may be causing the low RBC count?

Please help.

I went through your query and understood your concern.

I went through your reports (the attachment removed to protect the patient's identity). Your RBC (red blood cell) count is not reduced much. It is borderline value. Your hemoglobin is within range. So the chance of iron deficiency anemia is less. I suggest you can do a peripheral blood smear examination for further investigations. If it shows a microcytic hypochromic picture, then you can check your serum ferritin level, which reflects iron stores.
