Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
My uncle is 57 years old. He got diagnosed with scrub typhus last week and is on antibiotics, but he has developed this red, itchy rash on his arms and back. It is getting worse instead of better. Is it normal for the rashes to look worse before they get better? Should we be using any special creams or medicated lotions? Also, how long does it usually take for the rash to disappear completely? He keeps scratching, and it is making it worse. Is there anything that will stop the itching?
Please suggest.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I read your query and can understand your concern.
It is not uncommon for a rash to develop or worsen while on antibiotics for scrub typhus. This could be a reaction to the medication or part of the disease's progression. To manage the itching and rash, consider using over-the-counter antihistamines and applying Calamine lotion or Hydrocortisone cream to soothe the skin. It is important to avoid scratching to prevent further irritation or infection. The rash usually takes a few days to a couple of weeks to disappear completely, depending on the individual's response to treatment. If the rash continues to worsen or if there are other concerning symptoms, it is essential to consult with the healthcare provider for further evaluation and possible adjustment of the treatment plan. Please book a consultation with me if you would like to know more detailed information on any of these points or if you have other questions.
I hope this helps.
Thank you, and take care.
